I am a hot sauce expert. A plethora of top-notch brands and flavors are in my purse at all times, and I always jump at the chance to slather it on my food whenever possible. While spicy foods in general can be quite divisive for some, I can’t relate. I love a little extra heat on everything I eat—even gummies.
Specifically, I’m talking about Frank’s RedHot spicy gummy bears, a brand-new collaboration between Frank’s legendary hot sauce and Huer gummy candy. As soon as I saw them I thought, how on this grand green earth would these gummies taste? I got my hands on some to see what they’re like and report back so you can stock up too.
What do the Frank’s RedHot spicy gummy bears taste like?
This candy is a romantic mix between sweet and spicy. And I mean romantic because the flavors marry together so well. Honestly, when I first opened the bag, I was a bit scared. The aroma of fruit and hot vinegar hit me like a wall, and I immediately had an adverse reaction. It kind of reminded me of some drinks I used to have in college. But lucky for you, I forged on.
There are six fruit flavors per bag: cherry, pineapple, mango, strawberry, orange and lemon. I tasted all the flavors separately, but the lemon and pineapple stood out the most. Tropical and citrusy flavors go extremely well with spice. If you’ve ever had mangoes or limes with Tajin, you know what I’m talking about. At first, you get the sweetness of the fruit. There’s an underlying heat that gradually builds until it coats your entire mouth. If you’re not a fan of spicy food, these will definitely be too spicy for you. I’m a seasoned veteran, and they still maintain a good kick. Even after I’d finished my thorough taste test, I found myself reaching back into the bag.
If you know anything about Frank’s RedHot, you know it’s the original buffalo wing sauce. It’s iconic. And while you probably wouldn’t expect to mix it with some fruit, maybe we should have been doing this a long time ago.
