I've been waiting for years!
Every time a new fast-food menu item pops up, I get excited. That excitement is usually tempered by the fact that there’s no guarantee how long it will stick around. I mean, Taco Bell’s Mexican pizza is probably the poster child for this—the chain keeps dangling it in front of us before snatching it back again!
When the pandemic hit in 2020, a lot of fast-food restaurants started simplifying their menus. This meant that some regular items were getting discontinued. One of those items was a classic menu item at KFC that I deeply cherished.
But I have great news for anyone who has spent five years missing the KFC potato wedges: they’re coming back!
When are the KFC potato wedges coming back?
The KFC potato wedges are an elite menu item, and fans know that. In fact, when the wedges left the menu in 2020 (to be replaced with “secret recipe fries”) a die-hard potato wedge fan actually started a petition to bring them back. It has 8,000 signatures and counting. I don’t have proof of this, but I think that petition worked. It’s worth a read if you have a minute. The way the petition starter, Kinzey, talks about the wedges is a great reminder of how food is intertwined with every aspect of our lives.
I used to live in a very small town that did not have many restaurants. But when I wanted to treat myself, I would do what I call the drive-thru trifecta. I’d get a Diet Coke from McDonald’s, a Cheesy Gordita Crunch from Taco Bell and the potato wedges from KFC. With this meal, I was unstoppable! The KFC potato wedges are the best fast-food potato option, hands down. They’re crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside and seasoned so well, you keep going back for more. I would even go a step further to say these are the only fast-food potato option that don’t become inedible the second they get cold. They’re that good.
Earlier this year, KFC announced that it was bringing back the potato wedges to a handful of restaurants in Florida. This was a limited return in a test market, and it started giving fans hope that the wedges would soon be back for good. Now loyal—not to mention patient—potato wedge fans can get them again in KFC locations nationwide starting on August 18. I certainly know where I’m grabbing lunch that day!
