I’d consider myself a cinnamon-loving fiend. It’s my absolute favorite spice compared to any other I’ve tried in my life thus far, and I can’t imagine it being dethroned any time soon. Does that mean I believe cinnamon makes everything taste better? Usually, yes. I think it’s a versatile spice that has a place in both sweet and savory dishes—especially in traditional Thanksgiving dishes (the holidays truly are cinnamon’s time to shine).

So, then, you’d think my reaction to the new Kraft apple pie mac and cheese would be one of pure delight. While you’re not totally wrong, my inner food critic was more intrigued than anything else. What could this mashup possibly taste like? Apple pie is a longtime favorite pie, and mac and cheese is one of the most comforting dishes to have ever graced this simple planet—but together? With Kraft box and saucepan in hand, I decided to give it a go.

What does the Kraft apple pie mac and cheese taste like?

I prepared the Kraft apple pie mac and cheese exactly as the box described: 1/4 cup of milk, 4 tablespoons of butter or margarine and the cheese powder. I normally take liberties with how I prepare my regular Kraft mac, but I didn’t want to influence this taste test. When I first opened the powder packet, I thought I was in for a wild ride. I could smell the dessert emanating from the open package and feared for my taste buds as I graciously dumped it into my pot of pasta.

It looked the same as regular mac once I cooked it up, so I took a hesitant first bite. In the end, it tasted like regular mac and cheese too, but with a little less cheese flavor and a subtle twist of cinnamon. The apple flavor was pretty nonexistent, which made me a bit sad, but I had a great time chomping down. I basically finished the whole pot by myself.

In the end, what I wanted was more apple pie pizzazz. I wanted weird. I was looking forward to a confusing flavor combination that made me think critically about what I was putting in my mouth. The best way to describe it would be to say that it tasted like an open container of mac and cheese was left a little too close to the apple pie in the fridge. A whisper of sweet mixed in with the cheese, but not enough to deter your appetite.

Is it the next best Thanksgiving side? Probably not, but it’s a cute novelty. If you’re looking for the best flavor experience though, it’s not distinct enough to merit buying it over regular Kraft mac and cheese.

How can I get Kraft apple pie mac and cheese?

Kraft apple pie mac and cheese is currently available through Walmart’s website, although it’s yet to be seen whether or not it will be available on physical store shelves. Could this secretly become a modern Thanksgiving classic? Only time will tell!
