If you’ve been protein-maxing in the new year with tuna, it’s time to double-check your cans. There’s been an important update to a tuna recall from February 2025. This original recall was for faulty pull-tab lids that may have compromised the airtight seal of the can. This increased their risk of exposure to clostridium botulinum contamination, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning.

Apparently, cans of tuna from that recall have been mistakenly shipped out to stores again. Here’s everything we know so far.

Why is the tuna being recalled again?

A third-party supplier inadvertently released the product linked to the February 2025 recall, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The cans in question had been put into quarantine by Tri-Union Seafoods, but were accidentally shipped last week to a limited number of stores in nine U.S. states.

What stores have the recalled tuna?

So far, the recalled tuna cans have been shipped to the following stores and states:

  • Meijer: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin
  • Giant Foods: Maryland and Virginia
  • Safeway, Albertsons, Vons, Pavilions: California

You can also contact Tri-Union Seafoods at 833-374-0171 if you have any questions or want a coupon for a replacement product. If you have already consumed the tuna and feel ill, seek medical attention.
