Outdoor pizza ovens have become increasingly popular for cooking restaurant-quality pizzas at high temperatures at home. But what if you don’t have the room in your backyard or patio to set up a pizza station? Or, what if a cold climate (hello, Wisconsin!) separates you from melty, cheesy goodness six months out of the year? Luckily, an indoor pizza oven is an option.

Indoor pizza ovens mimic what an outdoor pizza oven can do. Typically, they’re all-electric, harnessing high heat to cook a pizza in a matter of minutes. The very hot temperatures result in a crispy crust, cooked toppings and wonderfully melty cheese. I make pizza at home in either an outdoor or indoor pizza oven at least once a week, and I’ve tested multiple brands and designs. The Ooni Volt 2 replaces the now-discontinued Ooni Volt that I have used and loved. The new version is an upgrade, albeit in a smaller footprint intended for indoor use only.

Setup is quite simple, although you do need to season the oven before making your first pie—just turn it up to 850 degrees, then let it cool. The main power switch is located at the back of the oven with an easy-to use control panel on the front for temperature presets. The oven features three temperature presets for the various pizza styles, along with two presets you can customize for crusts just the way you like them.

It took 18 to 20 minutes for the Volt 2 to heat up. The presets make it easy, but you can also turn the dial to adjust the temperature. This oven gets quite hot during use and takes its time to cool off, so make sure you use it on an oven-safe surface—Ooni suggests placing a trivet or a pad beneath. The oven is louder than I expected while in use. I wasn’t expecting a silent oven, of course, but the fan whirrs loudly to release all that steam and heat from the oven.

I performed three different tests using the Volt 2 to test its pizza-making prowess, as well as its versatility with other foods. I fired it up to the Neapolitan setting (850 degrees), which produced an evenly baked crust with nice browning and spotting throughout. Next, I tried a longer bake at 700 degrees, which resulted in a chewier crust with a crisp structure and less cooking on top, thanks to the adjustable top heat coil. Both pies were done in 90 seconds to 2 minutes, depending on the settings. Lastly, I tested the oven’s temperature range by roasting sweet potatoes in a pan at 425 degrees. I can say for sure that this pizza oven does more than just make a great pizza.

The Ooni Volt 2 cooks evenly every time. The cheese melted beautifully, and there was a nice, even browning and well-cooked toppings. It made the pizza crust just the way I like it, with a lightly crisp outer layer and a fluffy center. I appreciated not having to turn the pizza mid-bake, thanks to the adjustable settings on the top and bottom heat coils.

At 10.35 x 17.4 x 21.46 inches, the Ooni Volt 2 has a more compact footprint than its predecessor, but it does have a larger window with a brighter light for easier viewing during baking. The ease of use is similar to that of the first Volt, although I appreciate the upgrade with the two custom presets and the adjustable top and bottom heat coils. I found it comparable to using the Breville indoor oven, although the Ooni Volt 2 has more presets and customization options.

Keeping it clean between uses can be a bit tricky. I learned a pizza oven brush or a cloth was the best way to clean the pizza oven without using water; you can also flip the stone over between bakes. The grease and smoke filter are both dishwasher safe for easy cleanup.

Although the design is more compact, those with small kitchens may still find this nearly 39-pound appliance to be somewhat bulky. Still, it’s worth making room for it if you enjoy making pizza at home. Plus, its cooking versatility—everything from roasting vegetables to baking cookies—offers even more bang for your buck.

Cuisinart’s indoor pizza oven is a great option for those who want to make quality pizza at home without complicating things (and without the higher price tag!). The pizza oven has a simple on/off switch and a temperature dial ranging from 350 to 700 degrees. Reaching the top temperature takes 20 to 30 minutes to preheat. Constructed from stainless steel, the oven weighs much less than other options on the market at 25 pounds and is 17.5 x 19 inches.

Our Test Kitchen tried this indoor pizza oven and found that the internal light was bright and incredibly helpful to watch the cooking process. “It was fun to watch the transformation and pretty essential considering the crusts cook so quickly with a fairly small window of doneness,” says Peggy Woodward, RDN. She also notes that this pizza oven is really simple to operate and the front decals imprinted on the door to note cooking times for different types of dough and pizzas are very helpful. Pizzas cook in about five minutes, with a 12.5-inch cooking area to accommodate 10- to 12-inch pizzas.

Cuisinart also makes a great 3-in-1 outdoor pizza oven, but this one is all-electric and sits easily on your countertop. It has built-in fans for cooling, which Peggy notes make a bit of noise, but are helpful for cooling the oven down faster after use.

Breville’s Pizzaiolo indoor pizza oven is known as a smart oven, and for good reason. It’s incredibly intuitive to use and clever as can be. Straight out of the box, the oven is simple to prep for pizza making. All you have to do is take it out of the packaging, slide the pizza stone in, plug in the oven and turn it on.

The oven is constructed from stainless steel and comes in two color options: Brushed steel or black truffle. The stainless steel construction provides durability and great heat retention, without the oven being too bulky or heavy. The sleek design very much resembles a toaster oven, but it’s a bit larger.

Powering on the oven is as simple as turning the temperature dial to select from various cook types: New York-style pizza, thin-crust pizza or a piping hot temperature setting to resemble wood-fired pizza. You can even use the oven to bake a frozen pizza. When I turned the dial to preheat the pizza oven to 750 degrees, it took 17 minutes to get up to the proper temperature and beeped to signify when it was hot enough for cooking.

To test this oven, I prepped several pizzas using the included metal pizza peel. Once the pizza dough had been stretched and topped, it was time to launch. When the oven door is opened, the pizza stone is pulled out toward the opening of the door, making it easier to launch in the tight space. This is just meant for 12-inch pizzas, after all. After a successful launch, it only took two to three minutes for each pizza to be cooked throughout.

While I like to watch my pizzas cooking through the front window, there is a timer to set if preferred. There’s no need to turn the pizza while cooking in this oven, thanks to the fact there’s no live flame. Instead, top and bottom heating elements do all the work, making for a nice even bake. You can choose to move the dial to adjust the top temperature and deck temperature to cook any pizza exactly to your liking. Every pizza I made came out with a perfectly crisp leopard-spotted base, with even browning and even cooking of the toppings and melted cheese.

While the oven is on, a fan is working to improve the movement of heat on either side of the oven. That’s also very helpful if too much flour residue ends up on the pizza stone — the fan will help move smoke out of the oven so it doesn’t stay captured inside. The oven itself gets pretty hot at peak temperatures, but I was surprised that the top was only warm. The double-paned glass door on the front was exceptionally hot, but the handle kept cool the whole time.

Overall, I was impressed with the cook on my pizzas coming out of this oven. With a temperature range of 350 to 750 degrees, it offers enough versatility to utilize it for cooking other small items as well. The oven also came with a pizza pan for making deep-dish pizza, along with the metal pizza peel. I prefer a perforated or wooden pizza peel to prevent dough from sticking while sliding a pizza into a pizza oven, but this still did the job while performing multiple tests. Next time, I will plan to swap it out for another peel I prefer. After making pizzas, each time it took quite a while for this oven to cool down to the touch.

“An electric pizza oven definitely takes trial and error to get right,” says tester Nicole Doster. “To test this one, I made four pizzas. You first place the pizza stone on the lowest metal rack. Then, select the pizza setting. The first pizza I tried was the Neapolitan-style setting (two minutes at 750 degrees). Sadly, it ended up being pretty badly burnt on the bottom.”

“For the consecutive pizzas, I went with the New York-style pizza setting (six minutes at 525 degrees upper temp and 575 degrees lower temp) and had much better success,” she continues. “The pizzas cooked nicely with a fair bit of leoparding on the crust in under six minutes. Removing the pizza from the peel took a little getting used to but was easier to learn than I thought given the small oven size. I’ll definitely try this out again for my next pizza night.”

While Nicole notes that she can’t decide if this is a product she’d use all the time, its main draw is cooking homemade pizzas—and for her, those are usually for a special occasion. “I do appreciate that Gourmia made its indoor pizza oven multifunctional, adding air fryer, toast, bake and even dehydrate settings, replacing several countertop appliances in one,” says Nicole.

“The instructions were pretty user-friendly, though I do imagine, like with most all-in-one machines, I’ll get more used to the controls over time. I truly enjoyed making pizzas in the machine and getting to play around with different style pizzas. Even when things got a little temperamental, it was fun getting to find where the sweet spot was for my store-bought crust!”

What To Look for When Buying Indoor Pizza Ovens

Indoor pizza ovens can be a pricey investment, and the pizza oven options on Amazon and other retailers can be overwhelming. To find the best model for your needs, we asked Martin Glover, pizza oven expert and founder of the recipe and food blog, Dad What Cooks, for some advice. Here’s what to consider when shopping for a home pizza oven:

Size: It’s important to consider the dimensions and weight of an indoor pizza oven. “An indoor pizza oven is not (normally) an everyday-use item, so it will need to be stored somewhere,” says Glover. “Quality ovens can be quite heavy and bulky, so keep in mind you might need to allocate a space to both use it and store it.”

Maximum temperature: Pizza ovens reach much higher temperatures than regular ovens, but make sure your specific pizza oven can go high enough for the style of pizza you crave. “To get a decent Neapolitan style, the pizza oven needs to reach at least 800 degrees upwards,” says Glover. The pizza stone will help retain the heat, as will the width of the oven wall and its insulation. “A good pizza oven should cook you a Neapolitan pizza in 60 to 90 seconds,” he says.

Price: Finally, keep budget top of mind. Some models approach the $1,000 price range, while others cost less than $400. It’s important to know how much you plan to invest. Glover believes you get what you pay for when it comes to kitchen appliances, and that applies to indoor pizza ovens. While there are budget-friendly models that made our list, it’s worth buying a higher-priced model that heats quickly and retains the heat if you plan to cook pizza at home often, Glover says.

How We Found the Best Indoor Pizza Ovens

We combined firsthand testing experience with our years of outdoor and indoor cooking knowledge to find the best indoor pizza ovens. We conducted first-hand testing of the Ooni Volt 2, Breville Pizzaiolo and Cuisinart’s pizza oven. To test the indoor pizza ovens, we timed how long it took to get up to certain temperatures, using an infrared thermometer to double-check for accuracy when the oven let us know it was up to the desired heat. We cooked multiple pizzas in the ovens at multiple temperature and style settings, noting how long the cooking time was for each.

Testers also assessed how hot the exterior of the oven was while on and cooking, and how long it took for the oven to cool once it was powered off fully.
