Sweet Potato Recipes FAQ

What are the best recipes to make with sweet potatoes?

There are so many amazing recipes with sweet potatoes that it’s hard to narrow down the best, but sweet potato pie, sweet potato casserole, sweet potato bread or muffins, and mashed sweet potatoes are favorites for good reason. These recipes use the natural flavor and silky texture of the potatoes to their advantage for tender bakes and custardy fillings. While many people prefer sweet potato recipes that skew sugary, the tubers also shine in savory dishes with spices, herbs or cheese, like soups and enchiladas.

Can you make sweet potato recipes on the stovetop?

Roasted and baked sweet potatoes are delicious, but you can also steam whole sweet potatoes, saute cubes, crisp shredded potatoes in a skillet, or simmer chunks in broth for soups, stews and chili recipes—all without turning on the oven. Shredded or finely chopped sweet potatoes will cook through faster than thick wedges, but regardless of the size, turn them frequently and adjust the heat as needed so the natural sugars in the potatoes do not burn.

How do you make sweet potato recipes healthy?

Healthy means different things to different people, but sweet potatoes are very nutrient-dense and versatile, so it’s easy to include them in high-protein, high-fiber or low-fat meals. Stirring cubed sweet potatoes into soups adds a dairy-free creamy bite from the velvety texture of the potato’s interior. Try topping half a warm sweet potato with Greek yogurt, berries and honey for a protein and fiber-packed breakfast or snack, or make it savory with a fried egg, salsa and cheese. Leave the skin on for even more nutrients.
