My grandmother made this treat every year for Christmas. It’s much better than everyday apple pie. The recipe is a family treasure. —Maxine Theriauit, Nashua, New Hampshire

Dough for single-crust pie (9 in.)

Combine 1-1/4 cups all-purpose flour and 1/4 tsp. salt; cut in 1/2 cup cold butter until crumbly. Gradually add 3-5 Tbsp. ice water, tossing with a fork until dough holds together when pressed. Shape into a disk; wrap and refrigerate 1 hour.

Ingredients

  • Dough for single-crust pie
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 6 medium tart apples, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen cranberries
  • TOPPING:
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 3 tablespoons cold butter
  • 1/3 cup sliced almonds, toasted

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°. On a lightly floured surface, roll dough to a 1/8-in.-thick circle; transfer to a 9-in. pie plate. Trim crust to 1/2 in. beyond rim of plate; flute edge.
  2. In a bowl, combine sugar, flour, butter, nutmeg and salt. Add apples and cranberries; stir gently. Pour into crust.
  3. In a small bowl, combine brown sugar, flour and cinnamon; cut in butter until crumbly. Stir in almonds; sprinkle over filling. Bake until apples are tender, about 1 hour.
