I received the recipe for Amish yum-yum salad from a friend of my mother's years ago. I always have the ingredients on hand in case I need a quick dessert. Any flavor of gelatin works well, and sometimes I spoon it into individual parfait glasses instead of serving it in one big bowl. Everyone enjoys it. —Yvonne Bellomo, Ebensburg, Pennsylvania

Yum-Yum Salad Tips

How can you make Amish yum-yum salad your own?

You can make Amish yum-yum salad your own by replacing the orange gelatin with lemon or strawberry gelatin. You can also stir in some drained maraschino cherries or shredded coconut for some added texture and flavor. Or instead of pecans, use pistachios! One thing we don’t recommend, though, is using homemade whipped cream as a substitute for the frozen whipped topping. Whipped topping is different than whipped cream, and has stabilizers that prevent the salad from becoming watery.

How can you serve Amish yum-yum salad?

You can serve Amish yum-yum salad as a side with many dishes, like roasted chicken and red potatoes. It can also be served as a dessert or snack!

Can you make Amish yum-yum salad ahead of time?

Yes! You can make Amish yum-yum salad ahead of time. It will stay fresh when covered and refrigerated for 2 to 3 days (if it lasts that long!).
