Princess toast is a colorful, whimsical treat that's just as fun to make as it is to eat.

Princess toast isn’t a healthy part of a balanced breakfast. Instead, it’s a rainbow recipe to prepare anytime you’re looking to brighten your day with something colorful and sweet. I came across the recipe when my kids asked if they could host a tea party for their stuffed animals. Since cucumber sandwiches and duck liver paté are not their idea of kid-friendly food, we decided on princess toast, along with other fun treats like scones and lemon bars. Needless to say, the princess toast was the immediate favorite (for the kids and stuffies alike). With its pastel swirls of sweet buttercream, fruity jam, colorful sprinkles and edible glitter, it’s no surprise why.

What is princess toast?

If you’ve never heard of princess toast, the simple treat features strawberry jam and multicolored buttercream frosting on crisp pieces of toasted bread. From there, princess toast is adorned with rainbow sprinkles and flecks of edible glitter, resulting in a magical-looking snack that kids of all ages will love to munch.

Princess toast may remind you of fairy bread, but rest assured, the recipes are distinct from one another. Fairy bread is made with untoasted white sandwich bread that’s spread with butter and then coated generously with rainbow nonpareils. Princess toast, on the other hand, is made on toasted sandwich bread and is much sweeter due to the inclusion of jam and buttercream frosting.

Ingredients for Princess Toast

  • Toasted white bread: No need to get fancy. A soft sandwich bread is perfect for princess toast.
  • Seedless strawberry jam: We recommend a seedless jam for princess toast. This way, all the texture comes from the playful sprinkles and crispy toast, and it doesn’t overpower the silky buttercream frosting.
  • Buttercream frosting: While you can use white vanilla frosting for the recipe, we recommend adding a bit of food dye to the frosting for a few pastel shades. Then, swirl the frostings together over the toast for a beautiful presentation.
  • Sprinkles: Whether you use jimmies, nonpareils, quins, sanding sugar, sugar pearls or other novelty-shaped sprinkles, anything goes when it comes to decorating princess toast.
  • Edible glitter: This ingredient is technically optional, but it adds a wonderful sheen and sparkle to the toasts. We recommend tracking it down if you can. Wilton is one brand that offers edible glitter, and it’s available in many local supermarkets and online.

Princess Toast Variations

  • Use other jam flavors: If strawberry isn’t your jam, feel free to use any flavor. Raspberry, blueberry, cherry or apricot would all taste great. Taste of Home community cook Marina Castle Kelley, from Canyon Country, California, contributed the recipe, and recommended trying lemon curd instead of jam.
  • Try buttercream alternatives: If you don’t have buttercream, you can still enjoy princess toast. Instead, add a few drops of food dye to plain cream cheese spread, cream cheese frosting or marshmallow fluff.
  • Put a twist on the toast: While plain, white toast is the norm, feel free to experiment with sliced and toasted bagels, multi-grain bread or croissants.

How to Store Princess Toast

You should eat princess toast right away, but you can place any leftovers in an airtight container and refrigerate them for up to two days. Separate layers of princess toast with parchment paper to prevent them from sticking together.

Do you need to toast the bread for princess toast?

No. While you usually toast the bread for princess toast, you can leave it untoasted if you prefer. That said, untoasted white bread is soft and delicate, so it may tear easily when spreading the buttercream. If you want to make princess toast with untoasted bread, make sure the buttercream is at room temperature so it spreads easily.
