This skillet pizza proves that you don't need fancy equipment to make pies at home. Simply use your stovetop, a skillet and all the classic, or not so classic, pizza toppings.

If you like the idea of satisfying your pizza cravings at home, our skillet pizza is here for you. While there are plenty of pizza recipes out there, most of them call for cooking the pie in an oven. All you need for this recipe is a skillet and a stovetop, which means homemade pizza without heating up the oven.

The results are equally good too. You get a crispy, golden brown pizza crust topped with melted cheese and your choice of pizza toppings. You don’t even need to stretch the pizza dough precisely, because you’ll simply press it into the base of the pan and let the skillet do the work from there. A bigger skillet will yield a thinner pizza crust, and a smaller pan means a thicker, chewier base.

Make a stovetop pizza at your next pizza party and watch your guests be amazed at how effortless it really is.

Skillet Pizza Ingredients

  • Pizza crust mix
  • Tomato sauce
  • Italian seasoning
  • Pepperoni slices
  • Onion
  • Green pepper
  • Ripe olives
  • Mozzarella cheese

Directions

Step 1: Prepare the pizza crust

Grease a 12-inch electric or stovetop skillet. Prepare the pizza crust according to the package directions.

Step 2: Layer the ingredients

A cast iron skillet holds an uncooked pizza topped with cheese, olives, and vegetables. Bowls of shredded cheese, sliced olives, chopped onions, and green peppers surround it on a white wooden surface.

Line the bottom and 1/2 inch up the sides of the skillet with the dough. Combine the tomato sauce and Italian seasoning, then spread it over the dough. Layer the pepperoni, onion, green pepper and olives over the sauce, then sprinkle on the mozzarella cheese.

Step 3: Cook the pizza

Cover and cook the pizza over medium heat (set the electric skillet to 375°F) until the crust is brown on the bottom and the cheese is melted, about 15 minutes. Slide the pizza onto a cutting board and serve it immediately.

Editor’s Tip: As the crust starts browning, putting a lid on the skillet will help heat the toppings and melt the cheese more evenly with the trapped heat.

How to Store Skillet Pizza

Slice the pizza and keep the leftovers in a zip-top bag or an airtight container in the refrigerator. They should last for up to four days. To reheat, you can either zap the pizza in the microwave, use the oven or place the pizza on a skillet over medium-low heat, covered, until it is heated through.

What other toppings can you put on this pizza?

Add your usual toppings and create the flavor combination you love with our pizza in a skillet recipe. For alternatives, try adding arugula walnut pesto as the base and topping it with kalamata olives, sun-dried tomatoes, and goat’s cheese or feta for a delicious veggie pie. You can also create unique flavor combinations, such as a Reuben pizza with corned beef and sauerkraut, or go the tropical route with Hawaiian pizza (try jalapenos for an added kick). Or, keep it super simple with a classic margherita pizza.

Can I cook this pizza in a regular skillet on the stovetop instead of an electric skillet?

Absolutely! This skillet pizza can become a stovetop pizza with any skillet you have on hand. We do suggest using a cast-iron skillet, as it gets really hot and can properly crisp up the crust (if you’re not sure, first check out how to season a cast-iron skillet). A regular nonstick pan should work just as well too. Since you can’t set it to a specific temperature, start with medium heat on the stove and adjust accordingly.

What sides go well with skillet pizza?

Serve this skillet pizza with a simple Caprese salad, a green salad with baked goat cheese or even some marinated antipasto vegetables. To make it a carb extravaganza, you can’t go wrong with garlic bread.

Meet the Cook: I created this recipe during a hot spell one summer. With the temperature in the 90s every day, I didn't want to turn on the oven. So I decided to make our favorite family pizza in a skillet instead! Anyone who likes pizza, has kids or just wants a quick and simple meal would likely enjoy Skillet Pizza. It's great to take along to get-togethers, too - you can prepare it at home, then just plug in the skillet when you arrive. —Darlene Brenden, Salem, Oregon
