Italian turkey sausage and sauteed onions, mushrooms and green peppers tangle with melted cheese for a turkey sausage pizza perfect for your next at-home pizza party.

Pizza is always a comforting meal when nothing else hits the spot, and it’s even better when you can make one at home and skip waiting for delivery. This turkey sausage pizza has classic pizza flavors and ingredients with a few key swaps and shortcuts. Turkey sausage and part-skim mozzarella make the pizza a bit leaner while still offering a savory and creamy bite with no less flavor than a heavier version. For convenience, press frozen bread dough into a crust in minutes.

This pizza is also easy to customize. Swap in provolone for mozzarella for a twist on a Philly cheesesteak pizza. Make homemade pizza dough or pizza sauce if you have more time. For a richer, creamier taste, use white pizza sauce instead of the classic tomato-based sauce. However you build your pie, it’s bound to end up on your list of favorite turkey sausage recipes.

  • Frozen bread dough
  • Italian turkey sausage links
  • Onion
  • Sliced mushrooms
  • Green pepper
  • Pizza sauce
  • Shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese

Directions

Step 1: Shape and parbake the pizza dough

Preheat the oven to 400°F. With greased fingers, press the dough onto a 12-inch pizza pan coated with cooking spray. Prick the dough thoroughly with a fork. Bake until lightly browned, 10 to 12 minutes.

Editor’s Tip: Pricking the dough before baking is an essential step that allows steam to escape, prevents large air bubbles from forming and results in a more evenly crisp crust.

Step 2: Cook the sausage and vegetables

Meanwhile, in a large skillet, cook the sausage, onion, mushrooms and green pepper over medium heat until the sausage is no longer pink, six to eight minutes. Break up the sausage into crumbles as you cook it, and then drain.

Step 3: Assemble the pizza

Spread the crust with the pizza sauce. Top it with the sausage mixture and sprinkle with cheese.

Step 4: Bake the pizza

Bake until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted, 12 to 15 minutes longer.

A homemade pizza topped with mushrooms, cheese, and green peppers sits on a round metal tray. Three slices are cut. A pizza cutter, a red striped napkin, and small bowls of cheese and chili flakes are nearby.

How to Store Turkey Sausage Pizza

Store cooled turkey sausage pizza in food storage containers in the refrigerator. The pizza will last for up to four days.

How do you reheat turkey sausage pizza?

There are several easy ways to reheat pizza, including on the stovetop or in the oven, microwave and air fryer. The air fryer and oven create the crispiest slices, and the microwave is the fastest choice. Using a skillet on the stovetop is a nice middle-ground method that is relatively quick and will bring some crunch back to the crust.

What toppings go well on a turkey sausage pizza?

For extra color or spice, try sliced fresh jalapenos, pickled banana pepper rings, roasted red peppers or wilted spinach on your turkey sausage pizza. These are just a few suggestions because, really, you can add any of your favorite pizza toppings—even pineapple!

What is a good side dish for sausage pizza?

Garlic bread recipes, an antipasto platter and Caesar salad are classic accompaniments that would be great with this turkey sausage pizza. For something less expected, try a peach Caprese salad or a thyme and fig goat cheese spread with crusty bread to make it a complete meal.

Why should I cook the sausage before putting it on the pizza?

Since the sausage releases liquid and fat as it cooks, browning and draining it before adding it to the pizza keeps the crust from becoming soggy. Additionally, since home ovens aren’t as powerful as the ones at a pizzeria, you don’t want to risk having undercooked sausage by the time the crust is browned and the cheese is melted.
