Belfiore: Only the Nokia Lumia 1520 might have the necessary hardware to run Miracast
Microsoft's Joe Belfiore sent out a tweet on Sunday, with news that might upset some Windows Phone users. Despite Microsoft's statement at the unveiling of Windows Phone 8.1, that the new build of the OS supports Miracast, Belfiore's tweet revealed that certain hardware requirements are lacking on most Windows Phone 8 models. That means that even after the update, these phones will not be able to run Miracast.

According to Belfiore, who heads up the Windows Phone group, the Nokia Lumia 1520 phablet might be the only Windows Phone model that will run Miracast. Of the two new models that have been announced by Nokia, the Nokia Lumia 930 meets the hardware requirements for the screencasting service. That unit will have Windows Phone 8.1 installed out of the box.

Moving forward, we would expect Microsoft to release Windows Phone handsets with the necessary hardware requirements to make them compatible with Miracast. The technology allows smartphone users to mirror the screen on their device onto a television screen, sans wires.
