Google Maps 5.0 with 3D rendering of buildings now available for free download in Android Market

Last week at the D: Dive into Mobile conference, Google VP Andy Rubin got to show off his sexy Motorola tablet. He also used the device to show off something else-Google Maps 5.0. The new update is available now for free in the Android Market, and as we have reported, it shows 3D representations of buildings in the top 100 international cities.

The new software also will cache your most traveled routes allowing for off-line re-routing even if you have no signal on your cell phone. The upgraded program also uses less data and battery power and is more dependent on your phone's processor. This allows you to enjoy easier scrolling and smoother transitions.

Android handsets that fully support Google Maps 5 include the Motorola DROID immediate family (DROID, DROID 2 and DROID X), the Samsung Galaxy S and Nexus S, the HTC Droid Incredible, HTC EVO 4G and the T-Mobile HTC G2. Android 1.6 or higher is required to install the app while the 3D renderings and off-line navigation require phones using Android 2.0 or higher.
