Google Photos' Color Pop now available to some users

Announced at last week's Google I/O, the new AI powered Color Pop feature is beginning to make its way into the Google Photos app for some users. Color Pop automatically changes the color of the background in a photograph to black and white, while keeping the subject in color. This way, the subject stands out, and the colors of the photo appear to "pop." That's due to the juxtaposition between the black and white and color portions of the image.

For Color Pop to work, the subject needs to be easily identified by Google's servers. If a picture does meet the requirements, a notification will appear in the Assistant tab of the Google Photos app, v.3.20. A Reddit user shared an image he took that was edited by Color Pop. That photo accompanies this story, and was snapped using a Pixel 2 running the Android P beta.

Keep in mind that for the moment, Color Pop is not an edit that the user can manually choose for any photo. That might change down the road as the technology improves. Right now, it is merely a suggested edit.
