Need an Uber? Android users can no longer book one from Google Maps

Uber has certainly changed how people get around. With the service, you have an estimate in advance showing approximately how much your ride will cost, and you get to sit in a clean late model car instead of a dirty cab with a driver running up the fare. However, when it comes to booking an Uber, you can no longer do it directly from the Android version of Google Maps.

While you used to be able to schedule an Uber directly from the app, Google Maps for Android will now show you the estimate for a car taking you from point "A" to point "B" and also will display the cars available to pick you up. But instead of continuing the process of booking a ride, you now have to tap a button that reads "open app" to schedule the car. That button will take you directly to the Uber app if you have it installed on your mobile device. If you don't have the app installed, you will be sent to the Google Play Store where you can install it.

The Google Maps Help page mentions that the Android version of Google Maps will no longer book a ride for you (see below). While Apple Maps used to be able to schedule an Uber for you directly from the iOS-only app, that functionality was removed last summer.
