Sony wants your phone to shoot continuous selfies

20comments
Imagine a world where your smartphone is continuously snapping selfies. Sony has. The manufacturer has filed a patent application for technology that will allow your smartphone to snap selfies throughout the entire day. The photos are then sent to a server using a secure pipeline. What makes this interesting is the special software that places the selfies into different categories based on the emotions displayed in the picture.

Users will be able to call up happy selfies or sad selfies. Images with little emotion, or pictures where the software is unable to determine the proper emotion, are tossed . A timeline based on emotional responses to events can be created.

When Sony says that the selfies are snapped continuously, they weren't kidding. The program continues to shoot away, even when you're sleeping. That can actually help you discover the reason why you are not awakening every morning feeling refreshed and alert.

The patent was filed globally with WIPO and was originally submitted on Christmas Eve 2013, just as the selfie craze was beginning to take off. This could end up as one of those ideas that sounds good and even looks good on paper, but could be derailed by issues pertaining to privacy rights and other legal questions.
