Spurs Connect app game-ifies football matches

English soccer club Tottenham Hotspur has partnered with US mobile developer OneUp games to release another iOS application. Called Spurs Connect, the freemium app is a cross between Bingo and Connect 4 games with a social twist. Fans compete with their Facebook friends to predict the results of matches and get four in a row on the in-game board, as the Spurs' Premier League supplies them with live statistics. Virtual tokens can be bought as in-app purchases and used to obtain power-ups for an edge against your competition.

The Spurs notably pursue mobile apps' opportunities to connect with fans. Prior to Spurs Connect, the club launched an official news app, a merchandise shop and a "virtual world" for children called Tottenham Turfies. Its partnership with OneUp Games is anything but unexpected, given that the developer specializes in Connect-branded games for various basketball, American football, baseball and ice hockey teams. It also makes the official apps for US sports teams, such as LA Clippers, LA Lakers and Tampa Bay Roadies.
