Wi-Fi vulnerability discovered in some HTC Android smartphones, patch is on its way
It has been discovered that a Wi-Fi security hole is present on a number of HTC Android smartphones. The flaw could potentially allow for software with basic Wi-Fi permissions to acquire the user's SSID, as well as their access credentials. In combination with access to the internet, the harvested information can then be sent to a remote server without the user's consent.
HTC has already found a solution to the issue and will be sending a software fix to the affected devices in the near future. Some smartphones have even received it already. However, while most of the vulnerable smartphones should get the patch over-the-air, others will require a manual update. Here is a list of all HTC handsets that reportedly have the vulnerability:
- Desire HD (both "ace" and "spade" board revisions) - Versions FRG83D, GRI40
- Glacier - Version FRG83
- Droid Incredible - Version FRF91
- Thunderbolt - Version FRG83D
- Sensation Z710e - Version GRI40
- Sensation 4G - Version GRI40
- Desire S - Version GRI40
- EVO 3D - Version GRI40
- EVO 4G - Version GRI40
Additionally, these devices have been reported as not affected:
