Google just gave the Pixel Tablet two more years to live

If you own a Pixel Tablet, chances are that you are used to being disappointed by Google’s chaotic approach to tablets. This time though, the company comes with some good news that could make you hold on to your device a little longer.

Google provides the Pixel Tablet with two extra years of software support

Google is extending the full software support of the Pixel Tablet by two years. The company will launch two extra Android OS updates for its only tablet, extending the device’s software support period to five years.

A support page with information about the Pixel Tablet software now shows the device will receive guaranteed OS and security updates until June 2028. The same page has previously stated that the tablet would get Android OS updates until June 2026 and security updates through June 2028.

Just like the Pixel 7

That’s not the first time Google has extended the software support period for some of its older devices. At the end of 2024, the company extended the OS and security update windows for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 series from three to five years. Initially, both devices were supposed to receive three years of major Android OS updates and two more years of security updates.

The Pixel Tablet was launched in 2023 and features the same Tensor G2 chipset found in the Pixel 7 series devices. Considering that similarity, Google’s move is not such a big surprise.



Even with this update, it’s unlikely that Google will come back to making tablets anytime soon. Rumors about a potential Pixel Tablet 2 circulated shortly after the launch of the original model, followed by claims that Google would skip the sequel and directly launch a Pixel Tablet 3. Those rumors were squashed by the company when it announced that the development of a new tablet was put on hold.

Unlike Apple and Samsung, Google could never figure out how to make a popular tablet. The Pixel Tablet launched to mixed reviews and never turned into a proper iPad or Galaxy Tab competitor.

That took a while

Google is obviously not very interested in tablets. It took the company over a year to announce the extended software support, which I’m sure it could’ve done alongside the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 announcements. For me, that’s a clear message that we should leave any hope about a Pixel Tablet sequel behind.
