iPhone Air 2: what to expect

What's expected to change vs iPhone Air:
  • The thin design to be pushed even further: 5.6 mm or less
  • No major visual overhaul
  • 2nm processor (A20 Pro)
  • A second camera: potentially wide-angle
  • Slimmer OLED panel
  • Same display size
  • iOS 27 with a standalone Siri app

Expected release timeline:
  • Two release timeframe options: fall 2026, together with the iPhone 18 Pro, or spring 2027, together with the base iPhone 18.
  • More likely is a spring 2027 release.

Expected price:
  • Price could remain the same, some rumors even suggest a slight price decrease.
  • Price hikes still possible because of economic situation.

iPhone Air 2 release date

Most rumors and reports in the industry indicate that the iPhone Air 2 is coming in spring 2027, alongside the base iPhone 18 and the mid-range iPhone 18e.

* - probable dates

This split in releases (the Pro models coming in the fall, the non-Pro models coming in spring) has been rumored repeatedly in the past few months. The Air 2 is believed to launch with the non-Pro iPhones.

Meanwhile, the possibility of Apple deciding not to release an iPhone Air successor is also present. Samsung has reportedly chosen this route with its own super-slim model, the Galaxy S26 Edge, which is currently believed to have been canceled.

Recently, we heard talks that the iPhone Air 2 may actually get replaced by an iPhone 18 Plus. In a note to investors, an analyst claims that Apple may bring either the iPhone Air 2 or an iPhone 18 Plus together with the base iPhone 18. We don't know if this is just speculation at this point or if it's coming from industry sources, so do keep that in mind.

Directly contradicting the expectations of the analyst is another recent report that suggests the first iPhone Air actually sold better than some people believed. According to this report, the iPhone Air 2's predecessor has actually become a big hit in Asia. It actually was more than twice as successful in Q4 2025 as the iPhone 16 Plus had been during the same period in 2024.

iPhone Air 2 price

Leaks have not shared the iPhone Air 2 price just yet. Presently, the expectation is that the price may be the same as its predecessor: $999 for 256 GB of storage.

*- anticipated prices

However, do keep in mind that a price hike is not unlikely either. The entire industry is raising prices right now, and this could influence Apple's situation as well. The current price hikes are because of the skyrocketing memory chip prices, which are going up because of the demands of AI computing.

Apple's main competitor, Samsung, has recently raised its prices for its Galaxy S26 series and even its Galaxy A devices. Other companies are raising prices too. We'll see how Apple handles this situation.

iPhone Air 2 camera

Currently, the iPhone Air 2 is not expected to get a huge upgrade in the camera department.

iPhone Air 2 expected camera setup:
  • 48 MP main camera
  • 18 MP selfie camera

Rumors are contradictory on the topic, though. One leak suggests Apple may add a second camera. If that is true, it would be a big step up from the current Air, which only has a single 48 MP snapper on the back.

If Apple chooses to equip its super-slim phone with a second camera, we're probably looking at a 48 MP ultra-wide one. That would put the iPhone Air 2 on the same level as the current iPhone 17 with two 48 MP cameras.

According to rumors, this change may be possible if Cupertino uses a new Face ID unit to free up space for the second rear camera in the phone's body.

Meanwhile, we also hear the contrary from some reports. One report hints that nothing will change: the current setup may stay for one more year, leaving the Air with just one camera at the back.

As for the 48 MP Fusion camera that the current Air rocks, it's actually pretty solid. It features four focal lengths, including 28 mm and 35 mm options, plus a 2x telephoto lens with an updated Photonic Engine.

The photos it produces are good in different lighting conditions. However, the lack of a telephoto lens is noticeable.

iPhone Air 2 storage

iPhone Air 2 expected storage capacity:
  • 1 TB
  • 512 GB
  • 256 GB

Apple finally ditched the 128 GB base option with the iPhone 17 series and the first iPhone Air. We don't expect it to return.

So, the next-gen iPhone Air 2 will likely stick to the same storage tiers as the current model, with three options and the top-tier reaching 1 TB.

      iPhone Air 2 design

Currently, huge changes in the iPhone Air 2 design are not expected. Slim is in (that's the entire purpose of the existence of this phone, anyway) and is not going anywhere. Expect a thinness around 5.6 mm.

According to rumors, the Air 2 may continue to use titanium to balance strength and lightness. At the front and back, Ceramic Shield is likely to be used.

The iPhone Air 2 is also going to sport an IP68 rating like its predecessor for protection against dust and water.

The Action button for shortcuts and the Camera Control button are reportedly making a comeback as well.

The potential color options for the Air 2 have not leaked just yet. You can expect elegant and subdued colors this year as well, matching the overall aesthetic of the super-slim device.

      iPhone Air 2 display

      * - anticipated sizes

There aren’t any rumors yet about the iPhone Air 2 display, just like most other specs. But based on the current model, you can probably expect a 6.5-inch screen with up to 3,000 nits peak brightness.

And since Apple finally ditched the old 60Hz refresh rate, the next Air will almost certainly come with ProMotion, which is Apple's way of calling the 120Hz dynamic refresh rate.

        iPhone Air 2 battery

Thin phones usually mean battery compromises, and it appears that this may not be changing with the Air 2.

Likely, Apple is now switching to silicon-carbon tech this year, unfortunately. For such a slim phone, silicon-carbon battery tech is the only way we can see a meaningful jump in capacity.

For reference, the 2025 iPhone Air features a 3,149 mAh battery. It's pretty good for a day of use, but obviously not a powerhouse. Since Apple made the new MagSafe battery exclusive to the Air, expect this trend to continue with the next model.

The current Air scores about 6h 41m in battery tests, ranking #79 over the past two years. That’s just shy of the class average of 7h 9m, and it even beats the Galaxy S25 Edge, despite the latter having a much bigger battery.

Charging will likely stick with MagSafe support, along with wired speeds that aren’t exactly blazing fast – just enough to keep you going.

iPhone Air 2 features and software

The iPhone Air 2 is likely coming with iOS 27 out of the box.

Apple usually keeps its devices updated for years, so six or more years of software and security updates is a safe bet.

Apple Intelligence will definitely be onboard, meaning all the AI features from the current Air will carry over – and probably a few new tricks, too. Hopefully, by next year, Apple will finally roll out the upgraded Siri, and the Air 2 will support it as well.

Rumor has it that iOS 27 is bringing a standalone Siri app, which should be similar to the Messages app in terms of design and may function like ChatGPT and Gemini apps. You would be able to enter previous conversations. Siri may also be able to deal with things outside the app, in other apps as well.

Also, Apple may allow Siri to integrate with other chatbots. Siri may be able to send questions to generative AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude (if you have them installed on your device).

iPhone Air 2 hardware and specs

        iPhone Air 2's expected specs:
        • A20 Pro chipset (2nm)
        • RAM: 8 GB
        • Battery: ~ 3,149 mAh
        • Charging: up to 20W wired charging and up to 20W wireless charging
        • Storage: 256 GB, 512 GB and 1 TB
        • Camera setup: 48 MP main camera and 18 MP selfie camera
        • Connectivity: Wi-Fi 7, 5G, Bluetooth 6, eSIM only

The A20 Pro chip is likely to power the iPhone Air 2. That's the processor expected for the iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone 18 Pro.

This processor could be a big deal. While the A19 in the iPhone 17 series is built on a 3nm process, the A20 is rumored to move to 2nm (N2). That could mean around 15% more performance while using 30% less power – easily one of Apple’s boldest chip upgrades yet.

Moreover, Apple is reportedly working on the C2 modem, the follow-up to the C1 from the iPhone 16e. This next-gen 5G chip could launch with the iPhone 18 lineup in 2026 and aims to fully cut ties with Qualcomm. Expect better mmWave support, faster carrier aggregation, and improved power efficiency.

Should I wait for iPhone Air 2?

        • You should wait for the iPhone Air 2 if you’re not in a rush. The phone is still a ways off, and if you want the super slim iPhone but prefer the second-gen model – which usually fixes early issues and feels more polished – the Air 2 could be worth holding out for.

        • You should not wait for the iPhone Air 2 if you want a new iPhone right now. The current generation dropped not too long ago, so if you’re not up for waiting for months, grabbing it now makes more sense. Plus, if super slim phones aren’t really your style, you might be happier with the regular iPhone 17 or one of the Pro models.
