The iPad is neither a phone nor a computer. It sits snugly in between. As phones grow larger and laptops grow thinner, some question why the iPad still exists. Yet, it remains unparalleled and unchallenged.
For most, the iPad is a casual, in-between device that you reach for when you have had enough of your workstation and your smartphone. It's neither a communication tool nor a de facto productivity device. It's simply, stubbornly, the iPad.
That's the beauty of the iPad. It can adapt to your use case and be whatever you want it to be. And it can do that without trying to be something else.
Foldables can never
Foldable phones open up into tablets, but in their current state, they can't replace tablets. For one, foldable devices can be thick when folded, though recent ones have mostly done away with those complaints.
A foldable phone is trying to be too much, and that precisely is the problem.
Are the days of tablets numbered?
No, it's a distinct category.

After years of resistance, Apple has stopped pretending that it's not hobbling the iPad's potential. Recent changes to iPadOS mean the differences between the MacBook and the iPad have blurred, even if there's a lot of friction. Frankly speaking, I am not invested in this transition.
For those who want to use the iPad as their primary computing device, a Mac-like iPad could make life easy.
However, I am perfectly content with where the iPad is. With remote work muddying the boundary between work and private life, I can barely use my phone without a nagging guilt that I ought to be doing something productive.
I am content with Steve Jobs' vision of the iPad: a big-screen device for web browsing, reading, and media consumption.
Not everything has to be another tool in your arsenal for supercharging your productivity. Some gadgets can continue to exist as a reminder of simpler times.
