Google just quietly made one of the cheapest ways to get into the Pixel world even cheaper, and the timing is pretty interesting.

Google now sells a refurbished Pixel 8a for $339

In a new blog post, Google confirmed that the Pixel 8a has joined its certified refurbished lineup on the Google Store at $339. That's $160 off the phone's original $499 price when it launched in May 2024.

The Pixel 8a sits alongside the Pixel 8 ($459), Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, and Pixel 7a in Google's pre-owned catalog. Google also shared that it will start selling refurbished Pixels through Amazon, though those listings weren't fully live at the time of the announcement.

What you're getting for $339

For the money, the Pixel 8a is still a very capable phone. You get a Tensor G3 chip with 8 GB of RAM, a 120 Hz OLED display, and a 64 MP main camera that does really well thanks to Google's photo processing smarts. As we noted in our review, this phone gives you nearly everything the regular Pixel 8 does for a lot less money.

The bigger story here is software support. Google promised seven years of Android updates for the Pixel 8a, which means this phone keeps getting the newest version of Android through 2031. That's about five more years of updates from today, and honestly, that's more runway than most brand-new budget phones give you.

Who this actually makes sense for

The Pixel 10a just launched at $499, so paying $339 for a phone that's two generations old is a genuinely solid proposition for the right person. Think a parent who just needs something reliable with a clean, simple interface. Or a student who can't drop $500 on a new phone right now.

For $160 more though, a brand-new Pixel 10a gets you a brighter screen, faster charging, and a full seven years of support starting from 2026 instead of 2024. That gap matters more than it looks on paper.

A solid budget pick with a caveat

I'd personally go for the newer device if my budget allowed it. Having used both the Pixel 9a and Pixel 10a, I think the "a" line is one of the strongest entry points into Android right now. But not everyone needs the latest hardware, and a $339 Pixel 8a with five years of updates ahead of it is tough to argue against for someone who just wants a phone that works and stays updated.
